After the Norman invasion St Edmund was gradually replaced by the more continental St George but to the English he was never forgotten and during the dark days following 1066 he was seen as a strong symbol of English identity. At the battle of Agincourt while the mounted knights, who were largely of Norman descent, flew the Cross of St George it was the banner of St Edmund that was flown by the English warriors.
His feast day is November 20th and there is an on-going campaign to have St Edmund's Day marked with a bank holiday. While St George remains the Patron Saint of England many Englishmen increasingly regard St Edmund as the Patron Saint of the English. Wear this t-shirt with pride and remember a King who gave his life for England.
St George is for England, St Edmund for the English!
